The suspect shot by police in a Newport parking lot on Sunday suffered life-threatening injuries, Kentucky State Police (KSP) said Tuesday.
That suspect was involved in a police pursuit that encompassed all three Northern Kentucky counties, starting in Boone Co.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to 196 Mary Grubbs Highway in Walton at 4:14 a.m. on Sunday.
They made contact with a man and woman inside a vehicle, and asked the man to exit the car.
The sheriff’s office said that the man exited the car and pointed a handgun in the face of a deputy who deflected it and fell to the ground.
The suspect then pointed the gun at a sergeant on scene, the sheriff’s office said, before fleeing on foot.
Deputies pursued the suspect but another vehicle in the area picked up the man and left the scene.
No shots were fired then.
One deputy suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Kenton County Police then attempted to stop a vehicle matching the description of the one that picked up the suspect and fled the Walton area but the pursuit went all the way to Newport where the car stopped in the Newport Plaza parking lot.
A suspect got out of the car and shot at officers, said Kentucky State Police.
Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect.
Details on which suspect was shot or on other suspects involved were not released by KSP, which is now handling the investigation because police were involved in the shooting.
The wounded suspect was first treated at the scene by Campbell Co. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and then transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
KSP said that specific details are not typically released in an ongoing investigation “until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathers.”
Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case, KSP said in a news release.
