For 68 minutes, Bishop Brossart and Simon Kenton played a rather calm soccer game.

The Mustangs were leading 1-0 and then a barn-burner broke out.

The visiting Mustangs came away with a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers for their third straight win. It was the first time Simon Kenton (3-1) allowed more than one goal in the young season.

Brossart (3-1) senior midfielder Abby Lloyd had a hand in all three goals. Lloyd scored her second and third goals in that final stretch of the game and assisted Rachel Shewmaker’s goal with 12 seconds left in the first half. Lloyd has three goals and a team-high four assists this year.

“They’re a very physical team. They came out at us,” Lloyd said. “We knew that from the start so we had to play with them. We had to play physical, too. Just because they play that way doesn’t mean that we can’t. We talked about that at halftime.”

Zoey Woosley found Lloyd for the second goal with 11:10 left in the game. But Simon Kenton responded with a goal off a corner kick when Cam Ruble found Ella Smith with 8:01 remaining.

The Pioneers kept up the pressure, but Lloyd scored her second goal with 30 seconds left to make the final score.

“First of all, I was impressed with Simon Kenton down 2-0, coming back the way they did fighting,” said Andy Smith, Brossart head coach. “They’re a dangerous team. I thought our defense as always steps up to the test and gets done what they need to do. I think we lost a mark on the corner kick. Overall, the resiliency of my team seems to keep coming through and through.”

Simon Kenton outshot Brossart, 7-5 on goal. Brossart goalkeeper Madeline Broering and Simon Kenton goalkeeper Fayth Tomlin had four saves each.

Both teams play again Saturday. The Mustangs play at Madison Central (3-0) at 6 p.m. Simon Kenton plays three games against Tennessee teams in the Smoky Mountain Cup over the weekend in Gatlinburg, starting with Pope John Paul II at 10:45 a.m., then Arlington at 4:15 p.m.

Dixie Heights 2, Cooper 0

Karolyn Lighthall scored both goals as the Colonels (3-1) downed the visiting Jaguars (2-3). Makenna Long and Whitney Ragan had the assists.

“My players kept the intensity the entire game,” said Kellie Ponchak, Dixie Heights head coach. “There had been times in these last couple games where we had a lapse in intensity or a lapse in judgement. The other teams seems to capitalize on that. In this game, we kept the focus. We really played united.”

Ponchak credited junior Abby Parsons for her role in the game. Ponchak said Cooper marked Parsons hard the entire game. But Parsons still found ways to help the Colonels win.

“Since I was being marked really tight, I had to make quicker passes in there for other people, who happen to be unmarked and move off the ball more,” Parsons said. “It was the quick one-twos and such that got us to move the ball better, possess it and build up to score those goals.”

Dixie Heights plays at St. Henry (1-3) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Cooper plays twice in the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, Tennessee over the weekend. The first game is Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Cumberland County (Tennessee).

Notre Dame 2, Beechwood 0

The Pandas (4-1) scored two second half goals against Beechwood (2-1) to earn a 35th District win.

“I think as we started getting in on them early, they kind of sat back a little bit,” said Brian Woeste, Notre Dame head coach. “(Beechwood head coach Guima Camil) and I talked after the game. He said, ‘We kind of had to.’ Based on the way we were going at them, they didn’t really have a choice. They have some talent, some pace up front and some nice defenders. We had better energy in the second half and got the ball wider a bit quicker in possession, which kind of opened them up.”

Notre Dame’s goals came from Kate Lenihan and Kimmie Woeste, Lenihan and Hannah Knapke recording assists. Goalkeeper Hannah Renaker made four saves and Joelle Hentz made two to combine for the clean sheet.

Lenihan recently switched positions from middle defender to an attacking defender. It is one of a number of moves Notre Dame has made trying to find the right combinations.

“My teammates play phenomenal balls. It’s about being in the right place at the right time,” Lenihan said. “I think it was hard to get the timing right with how many people were in the box. But Hannah Knapke and Sadie Yapp did a great job getting the balls forward. We were finally able to connect in the second half.”

Co-coaches Jenna Leistner and Leslie Litmer talk about bringing the intensity for a full match all the time.

Simon Kenton gave a solid test, but the reigning state champion Pandas won in three sets (25-11, 25-10, 25-17), on the road in Independence.

“I think we’re really proud of our girls for the intensity they were able to maintain throughout the entire match,” Litmer said. “It’s a blessing and a curse to be in this area because you never get an off day. All the teams we compete against are strong. So it challenges us every single day. We can’t overlook any team.”

Notre Dame (2-0) put up 35 kills, 33 assists, seven aces, 22 digs and six blocks. Julia Grace and Ella Goetz had seven and six digs to lead the Pandas setting the vaunted offense in motion. Lauren Ott and Lizzy Larkins recorded 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Ava Tilden put down 10 kills and Riley McCloskey had nine. Audrey Dyas led Notre Dame with three blocks and Ott added two aces.

“We just kept our energy up, worked as a team, talking as much as we can about the hitters on the other side and what was coming at us,” Ott said. “They had a very strong defense. We had to just keep pushing.”

Simon Kenton (1-1) had 16 kills, 14 assists, 29 digs and seven blocks with no aces. The Pioneers used three setters. Tiffanie Alo had five assists with Sadie Rehkamp and Ceanna Scalf recording four each. Keira Hans and Alisha Hawkins led Simon Kenton with six and five kills respectively.
