The Boone County Fiscal Court is set to discuss the growing use of e-bikes, e-scooters and other micro-mobility devices at its Sept. 24 caucus meeting.
The meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Boone County Administration Building, will give the fiscal court an opportunity to learn more about motorized micro-mobility devices and review findings from the county’s interdisciplinary team tasked with examining issues related to their use.
In addition, the public will have an opportunity to provide direct feedback and testimony to the court. The public can also provide input through an online survey by clicking here. The survey is open until Sept. 30.
“This rise in popularity of these micro-mobility devices is remarkable, even in just the past year,” Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore said in a news release. “E-bikes, e-scooters and other devices can give riders another way to enjoy the outdoors and get to and from work, but it’s imperative that we balance those opportunities with the safety of riders, pedestrians and motorists and in accordance with local and state regulations.”
Some of the issues expected to be discussed include:
- Current state and local regulations governing where micromobility devices can be operated and whether state laws need clarification.
- Whether county ordinances should be updated to expand permitted use of micromobility devices.
- Whether motorized micromobility devices should be allowed on county-owned sidewalks, multi-use paths and streets.
- Whether permitted use should be limited based on factors such as a device’s maximum speed, power source or whether it has pedals.
- What requirements, if any, should apply to riders and the operation of these devices.
- How the county can educate riders, parents and the broader public about existing or new regulations.
- How to promote the safe use of micro-mobility devices among riders, motorists and pedestrians.
No legislative decision related to the use of e-bikes, e-scooters and other motorized micro-mobility devices will be made at the meeting.
