Highlands continues to pour it on.

The Bluebirds (7-1) earned a convincing 53-7 win over the Boone County Rebels (1-6) in Bluebirds coach Bob Sphire’s 300th career win. Highlands moved to 3-0 in district action and Boone County dropped to 0-3.

Highlands outgained Boone County, 405-153 in total offense. Quarterback Brody Benke completed all seven passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns with Rio Litmer completing all five of his for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Adam Surrey had three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown with Tommy Ferring hauling in a 32-yard touchdown catch. Leo Paolucci had three carries for 57 yards and Cam Giesler had a 25-yard rushing touchdown.

The Rebels rushed for 123 yards. Braxton Graves led the way with 17 carries for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Both teams continue district action Friday. Highlands plays host to Conner (4-4) at 7 p.m. and Boone County goes to Cooper (6-2) at 7:30 p.m.

Ryle 37, Campbell County 36 (overtime)

The Raiders trailed 30-13 with 9:44 left in the game, but rallied to send the game to overtime when Josh Line booted a 23-yard field goal in the Class 6A, District 6 opener for both teams.

Ryle (3-4) scored first in overtime when Jacob Savage scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with Line making the point-after kick. Campbell County responded when quarterback Nathan Smith scored from a yard out. The Camels decided to go for two and the win, Smith’s two-point conversion pass falling incomplete out of the hands of a Camels receiver.

Ryle outgained Campbell County, 381-252 in total offense. Logan Verax led the Raiders completing 35-of-49 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Lorms caught 14 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Smith ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries for the Camels (2-5) and completed 8-of-11 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Both teams continue district action Friday. Ryle travels to Great Crossing (1-6) at 7:30 p.m. and Campbell County plays at Simon Kenton (4-2) at 7 p.m.

Ludlow 41, Trimble County 6

The Panthers won their third in a row with a convincing road win to open Class 1A, District 4 play.

Ludlow (4-3) outgained Trimble County (3-4), 393-150 including 259-142 on the ground. The Panthers also intercepted two Raider passes and recovered one fumble while throwing just one interception.

“Trimble lines up in the Power-I with two split ends. We’d seen it before. Bellevue runs it and Dayton ran it a few times,” said Woody McMillen, Ludlow head coach. “But the main principle is still the same. They try to run between the tackles.”

Spencer Brandenburg led the Panthers with four carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Miles Garrett added 54 yards rushing and one touchdown with Ethan Powell and Dameyn Anness had another one.

Ludlow quarterback Jackson Mays completed 4-of-6 passes for 134 yards with one touchdown pass to Anness. Anness had two catches for 55 yards and Powell had a 54-yard reception.

Aiden Smith, Brandenburg and Anness had 11 tackles each to lead the Ludlow defense. Powell and Byron Conley had interceptions with Carson Evans recovering a fumble.

Ludlow built a 34-0 lead in the first half. Brandenburg had Ludlow’s lone touchdown in the second half breaking free for an 89-yard score.

Ludlow plays host to Bishop Brossart (3-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. in a battle for first place in the district.

Simon Kenton 50, Great Crossing 36

The Pioneers opened Class 6A, District 6 action with their third win in a row.

Junior quarterback Brady Lee completed 15-of-24 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns for Simon Kenton (4-2) and rushed for 62 yards and another touchdown. Grayson Harris led Simon Kenton with seven catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns with Tysin Weaver catching two passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in addition to a rushing touchdown. Darrell Turner led the Pioneers on the ground with 29 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

Simon Kenton plays host to Campbell County (2-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Beechwood 67, Owen County 0

The Tigers have now outscored three Class 2A, 5th District opponents 177-3 after Friday night’s rout.

After five straight home games, Beechwood heads on the cheese wagon to Carrolton next week to face Carroll County. Both teams sit at 3-0 in district play.

Beechwood (7-1) has now cleared at least 49 points on the scoreboard in six of their eight contests.
