Caroline Eaglin continuously finds ways to score when the Newport Central Catholic girls basketball team needs points.
Eaglin reached a season-high 34 points making 15-of-17 free throws helping the Thoroughbreds knock off visiting St. Henry, 64-43 in 9th Region action. NewCath has won eight of its last nine games.
Eaglin had some help in the win. Madison McFarland scored 10 points and Jaylee Brannen made two 3-pointers on her way to nine points.
St. Henry placed three players in double figures. Kayla Unkraut led the way with 12 points with Joey Powers and Taylor Hill scoring 10 each.
NewCath (11-4) plays Conner on Saturday at 2 p.m. St. Henry (7-6) hosts Dixie Heights on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Girls Basketball
Simon Kenton 43, Conner 37
The Pioneers pulled out a tight win after losing a tough one Monday in which they led most the game.
Simon Kenton won despite making 8-of-22 free throws. Anna Kelch led the Pioneers with 10 points and Brynli Pernell scored eight.
“It’s really good to come back from the losses and win a big game,” Simon Kenton junior Rylie Flynn said. “We have to finish out the game even if there is just one or two minutes left. We have to keep fighting like we did (Wednesday).”
Anna Hamilton scored 17 points to lead Conner. Alexis Craddock followed with nine.
“We pride ourselves on individual and team defense, especially on a great player like Anna Hamilton,” Simon Kenton head coach Brenden Stowers said. “We knew if we could make it tough on Anna, we could make it tough on everyone else. She’s not one who stands around and lets you guard her. She reads the game and moves around. She made some difficult shots.”
Conner (6-10) had its four-game winning streak snapped with the loss. The Cougars travel to Boone County for an 8 p.m. game Friday.
The Pioneers snapped a two-game losing streak with the win. Simon Kenton (11-5) hosts Assumption on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cooper 44, Campbell County 34
The Jaguars won their 12th in a row, but the visiting Camels made them earn it in a low-scoring game.
Cooper recorded 18 steals off 27 Campbell County turnovers while giving up just four steals on 12 turnovers. The Jaguars outscored the Camels, 19-10 off those turnovers.
Cooper struggled to shoot it, hitting 31% of their shots, outshot Campbell County, but held the Camels to 26% from the field. Logan Palmer led all scorers with 18 points and Liz Freihofer scored eight.
Campbell County had eight different players score. Macie Peoples led the way with eight points.
Cooper (15-3) travels to Ryle on Friday for an 8 p.m. game. Campbell County (11-4) hosts Fleming County on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Holy Cross 60, Holmes 21
The Indians had 12 players score in the convincing 35th District victory.
Julia Hunt led Holy Cross with 12 points with Aumani Nelson, Miyah Wimzie and Aniyah Carter scoring nine each.
India Tye led Holmes with 10 points.
Holy Cross (12-4) has won five in a row and plays at George Rogers Clark in the MLK Junior Classic on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
Holmes (2-15) has lost 11 in a row. The Bulldogs host Ludlow on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Sacred Heart 71, Ryle 47
Ryle trailed 32-25 at the half, but were outscored 39-22 in the second half in a loss to the state’s No. 1 team.
The Raiders were led by Sarah Baker with 21 points and seven rebounds, Jaelyn Jones adding 12 points with three 3-pointers and Quinn Eubank adding eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
ZaKiyah Johnson was too much to overcome for Sacred Heart with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
Ryle (10-6) returns to action on Friday in a big district showdown with Cooper at 8 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic 81, Bellevue 64
The Thoroughbreds advanced to Friday’s semifinals and will take on Newport at Bellevue at 7:45 p.m.
NewCath (5-10) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
Bellevue (10-5) was paced by Jase Iles, who played at NewCath last year, with 27 points. Zach Mertens added 21, Noah Frommeyer with 12. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak. They return to action on Monday when they host Villa Madonna at 7:30 p.m.
