Former Kenton County District Judge Chas Brannen died on Tuesday, May 26, at the age of 79.

Brannen served as a Kenton County District Judge from 1978 to 1985 and was a fixture in his local community, frequently meeting friends and community members at Roebling Books and Coffee in Covington.

A native of Fort Mitchell, Brannen earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1968 and a law degree in 1971 from the University of Kentucky. He worked in private practice and in the insurance sector, in addition to serving as a judge.

Brannen was involved in several high-profile cases during his time as an attorney, including a case in the 1990s involving a battle over the expansion of the Devou Park Golf Course. Brannen would later be elected as the chair of the Devou Park Advisory Committee in 2017. He ran for a spot on the Covington Board of Commissioners in 2014. He also served on the executive committee of the Kenton County Democrats.

A memorial and graveside service has not yet been scheduled. Memorial contributions are recommended to the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky.
