The city of Elsmere awarded two high school graduates scholarships for their academic and extracurricular achievements.
At Tuesday’s city council meeting, members presented Lavar Herron and Krystal Ortega Garcia, graduates from Lloyd Memorial High School, each with a $3,000 scholarship.
Mayor Marty Lenhof shared some insight on the history of the scholarship during the presentation.
“I think this is the 17th year we’ve done this,” Lenhof said. “Sixteen with me as mayor and one as a councilmember and [I’m] very impressed.”
Herron plans to double major in special education and primary education at Mount St. Joseph University. Garcia was accepted into Berea College and will be studying theater.
Ten students applied for the scholarship this year, Lenhof said, which was raised from $2,000 last year.
Each applicant was required to have a cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher, participate in community volunteer opportunities, have a letter of recommendation from a trusted non-familial adult and proof of acceptance in a two- or four-year college or technical school for the upcoming fall semester.
Councilwomen Gloria Grubbs and Missy Tester and resident Patsy Acra make up the city of Elsmere’s scholarship committee, reviewing and selecting the two winning candidates.
“I just want to congratulate the recipients of the scholarship,” Tester said.
Alongside their scholarships, each recipient was presented with a clock engraved with their names. They were also added to the engraved plaque that hangs on the wall at council chambers.
“I want to congratulate both of you,” Lenhof said. “You’re going to do great in life, you can tell..”
