An executive order from Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear that reduced the state’s gas tax by 10 cents is set to expire on Wednesday throughout the commonwealth but two Northern Kentucky communities are getting an extension.
As of this posting, Alexandria and Covington are the only Northern Kentucky cities set to get an extension that will last until Tuesday, June 30.
“Gas prices are too high due to the continued war in Iran, and Americans – including right here in Kentucky – are struggling,” said Beshear in a written announcement. “Every dollar counts, and my executive order lowered gas and diesel prices across the state to help our families save. Government is there to help our people, and the state can and will make up any potential financial hit. Right now, our priority should be on Kentucky families, and I applaud these local leaders for doing what’s right.”
Beshear first issued the executive order on May 5 in the face of rising fuel costs. The governor also issued an executive order freezing the motor vehicle assessment rate at the start of next year and has lobbied Congress for a federal gas tax freeze.
Alexandria and Covington were among 33 cities and counties in Kentucky who secured a tax freeze extension. Everyone else will see a rise in their gas prices by at least 10 cents beginning Thursday.
