Independence Mayor Chris Reinersman announced Monday that the new Independence splash pad in Memorial Park is scheduled to open on July 6, just after the Independence Day weekend.

The splash pad is still under construction, but the mayor told LINK nky it should be completed by Friday.

Publicly available plans for the pad call for a 2,137-square-foot pad with a 1,038-square-foot concrete apron inside the park. An above-ground circulation system would be responsible for water control. The pad is located near the Memorial Park amphitheater.

Reinersman took a moment during his announcement to address a question he’d gotten from residents, namely, will the pad be restricted for Independence City residents? In short, yes, but he admitted that it would be difficult to enforce.

“We absolutely think it should only be used by Independence residents,” Reinersman said. “It is intended for Independence residents. It would cost us a bloody fortune to police that. It was discussed, but it would mean hiring multiple employees and all kinds of things. So, the decision was it wouldn’t be feasible. Now, if we end up having it completely overrun, we may have to reconsider that one, but everybody agrees this is an Independence asset for Independence residents.”
