The Covington City Commission passed over a resolution requesting the Northern Kentucky Riverport Authority, often referred to as simply the Port Authority, abide by the city’s zoning and historical preservation standards at their meeting Tuesday night.
The commission first discussed the resolution at their caucus meeting on Feb. 6. Specifically, the resolution “requests the Northern Kentucky Riverport Authority refrain from doing business in the City of Covington, unless those business activities are directly related to its core functions of maintaining, operating, and expending necessary and proper riverport and navigational facilities, or attracting industrial or commercial operations to property it holds as industrial parks.”
Mayor Joe Meyer said at Tuesday’s meeting that “since we talked last week, we have been in further discussions with the Port Authority’s representatives, and they’re very amenable to discussing or trying to work out a deal where they will acknowledge their obligations to abide by our historic preservation and zoning…”
The mayor recommended passing over a vote on the resolution but keeping the resolution on future agendas “until further notice,” he said. This would allow the city and Port Authority leeway to continue discussions. The motion passed unanimously.
