A primary goal of Southgate’s Park and Tree Board is to promote and educate the public on the value of trees, gardens and natural elements within the city. As a part of that effort, from May through October, the board selects two properties to be awarded a Green Thumb Award.
Properties are selected to honor and thank residents who have made a special effort to add beauty to their landscapes.
Council member Aileen Okura, liaison to the board, announced the July Green Thumb winners at the city’s Aug. 6 council meeting. Green Thumb awards went to residents at 142 Tracy Lane and 127 Evergreen Avenue.
Past winners of the 2025 Green Thumb awards included 111 Fort Beech Drive and 110 Maple Avenue in May, and a group of residents in the townhouses at 105, 107, 109 and 111 Ridgeway Avenue for June.
The Park and Tree Board also works with the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the National Arbor Day Foundation on public education projects. The city has been designated a Tree City USA by the Foundation for the past 20 years.
