Divya Karthikeyan has been named as the new editorial manager for Queer Kentucky, an independent publication focused on LGBTQ+ issues in the commonwealth.

Although Queer Kentucky covers stories throughout the state, much of its operations are based in Northern Kentucky.

Karthikeyan formerly worked as the capitol reporter for Kentucky Public Radio and the race and equity reporter for Louisville Public Radio. Her work has also appeared in The Intercept, The New Republic, NPR, The Guardian and CNN.

“Queer Kentucky has become an essential platform for stories that connect communities across the Commonwealth,” Karthikeyan said. “I’m honored to join a newsroom deeply committed to listening to people, reporting with care, and ensuring that LGBTQ Kentuckians see their lives and concerns reflected in the news. At a time when LGBTQ voices are increasingly under attack, it’s more important than ever to build strong, community-centered journalism and to mentor the next generation of Kentucky writers and reporters.”

Queer Kentucky’s founding Editor Spencer Jenkins recently stepped away from his role at the publication, and Karthikeyan will assume a similar leadership role in the newsroom. Queer Kentucky recently secured a nomination from GLAAD for Outstanding Independent Journalism. GLAAD is a well-known LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization.

“Queer Kentucky has built something remarkable under Spencer’s leadership and continued growth under [Executive Director Missy Spears’] direction,” said John Reisert, president of the Queer Kentucky Board of Directors. “Divya’s experience covering complex public issues and her commitment to thoughtful storytelling make her the right person to lead the newsroom’s next phase.”
