Kristen Smith, a rising senior on Northern Kentucky’s women’s golf team, won the 2015 Northern Kentucky Women’s Golf Association Amateur Tournament Tuesday evening.
Â
Smith shot a 67 on Monday to grab the lead and a two-stroke advantage over Jill Eddington after the first 18 holes.
Â
“The first day was the best round I’ve ever played, surpassing my lowest round ever by four strokes,” said Smith. “The course was playing pretty short and I knew whoever made the least amount of mistakes would win the tournament.”
Â
The Butler, Kentucky (Pendleton County HS), native continued her strong play in the second round, carding the lowest score of the day with a 73. Smith’s two-day total (140) was four strokes ahead of Nadine Innes, who leaped over Eddington to finish second.
Â
“This is the biggest tournament I play in during the summer and it means a lot to win this event,” said Smith. “It’s pretty awesome to have won it twice, first as I entered NKU as a freshman and now again entering my senior year.”
Â
Entering her final year as a Norse, Smith has played in 16 rounds over the three years and enjoyed her best year this past season with an 81.67 stroke-per-round average.
