See below from Week 10 on the gridiron that was.
Each week, we’ll provide the standouts from Friday night. The top passers, rushers, receivers, defensive and kicking standouts.
We’ll also look at 10 things to take away from the week.
Here goes…
10 takeaways
— Cooper’s Cam O’Hara continues to move up the all-time ranks in not only Northern Kentucky, but statewide. His touchdown pass on Friday gave him 133 for his career, tying him for third all-time in the state with Leslie County’s Tim Couch and South Laurel’s Ricky Bowling. He’s 11 touchdowns shy of the state record Elijah Sindelar’s 144. He also became the unquestioned passing yards leader in Northern Kentucky as he passed Ryle’s Tanner Morgan’s 10,303 yards and currently has 10,376 yards. The duo of O’Hara and running back Keagan Maher are just the second in Kentucky high school football history to have 10,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards while on the same team.
— Give Covington Catholic’s special teams coach a raise! They now have four touchdowns returned via a kickoff or punt return this season. The latest was the second game in a row they returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as Charlie Reeves took one to the house. They are also 49-for-49 on PATs this season and 4-for-4 on field goal attempts. That could be pivotal come playoff time.
— Boone County’s Malik Johnson cleared the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season in their game with Cooper on Friday. Johnson has 198 carries for 1,049 yards and 12 touchdowns as the Rebels head into their season finale. He’s the first Rebel to rush for 1,000 yards in a season since 2010 when Jordan Oppenheimer accomplished the feat. Johnson is one of just three in NKY to clear 1,000 rushing yards for the season so far. Cooper’s Keagan Maher (1,181 yards) and Dayton’s Malachi Kennedy (1,121 yards) the others.
— Highlands’ Tayden Lorenzen scored five more rushing touchdowns in the 42-28 victory over Scott County. That now gives him 18 rushing touchdowns on the season with three receiving touchdowns and a two-point conversion for 130 points. The 130 points scored is tied for 12th in the state.
— Holy Cross and Lloyd Memorial on the brink of perfect regular seasons. The Indians improved to 9-0 with a 43-6 victory over Ludlow. Only Bellevue stands in their way. The Juggernauts also moved to 9-0 with a 42-6 victory over Carroll County. They have Boone County left on the docket before the postseason begins.
— Ryle had five interceptions in their victory over Simon Kenton on Friday, including Evan Kincaid’s state-leading seventh of the season. The Raiders have 23 takeaways on the year. The top three team interception leaders on the season all hail from NKY. Newport has 17 interceptions, Ryle with 16 and Bellevue 15. Beechwood and Holy Cross are right behind them with 14 and 13, respectively.
— Congratulations to the following district champs: Ryle, Cooper, Highlands, Lloyd Memorial, Beechwood, Newport Central Catholic and Holy Cross. They will each have the opportunity to host at least two home playoff games.
— Playoff matchups for NKY teams can be found here. The first two round matchups are set, come the third round things revert to the RPI to determine matchups.
— Speaking of RPI, here’s your latest update. Keep in mind after next week, the RPI freezes and no one can move up or down. After next week, we’ll break down what it means.
