Week 2 prep football scores from Boone, Campbell and Kenton County:
Beechwood 53, Newport Central Catholic 6
Elder (Ohio) 28, Covington Catholic 20
The Colonels had a chance to tie late, but an Elder interception in the game’s final two minutes sealed the game for the Panthers at The Pit.
The Colonels opened with a bang on a Dylan Gaiser 96-yard kickoff return to the Panthers three, but were held to a field goal from there. The momentum shifting hold from Elder continued to stall CovCath’s offense as they trailed 14-6 at halftime.
Trailing 21-6 in the third, Gaiser scored from four yards out to make it 21-13. Down two scores again, Cash Harney found Logan Sanning for a 51-yard touchdown pass with 7:13 to play and making it 28-20.
Harney finished with 172 yards passing and 84 rushing. Donovan Bradshaw was his main target, hitting him four times for 37 yards. Gaiser tallied 50 rush yards and registered 11 tackles.
It’s the second straight year the Colonels have started 0-2. Last year, they won 11 straight games from this point and made it all the way to the state semifinals.
Boone County 40, St. Henry 6
The Rebels led 14-0 after one and 27-6 at the half.
St. Henry’s first points in program history came from Ivan Viveros pass to Kaden Lang in the second quarter.
Boone County added touchdowns in the third and fourth to improve to 2-0. Michael Chiasson threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns, Steven Johnson adding 134 yards on the ground with two scores.
Payton Crager was Chiasson’s top target with four receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson threw in 56 receiving yards with a touchdown as the Rebels racked up 480 yards of offense.
Boone County’s defense tallied 21 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, Marveen Moise leading the way in that department with three sacks.
Ryle 44, Conner 0
The Raiders led 14-0 after one, 31-0 at halftime and eventually got the game to a running clock.
Nathan Verax threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, Jacob Savage added 68 yards rushing and two scores and the Raider defense allowed under 100 total yards.
Savage added a receiving touchdown, Gavin Lyons recording seven receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Kai Workman led Ryle’s defensive effort with seven tackles, two of them for loss and had a fumble recovery and interception. Dylan Lee picked off his third pass of the season.
Conner’s Shepherd Dozier had 12 tackles and a sack to lead the Cougars defense. Joesiah Hernandez added 10 tackles and a sack.
Ludlow 42, Holmes 18
Ludlow led 21-0 at halftime before the Bulldogs got within 21-12 after three.
The Panthers would add three touchdowns in the fourth in improving to 1-1.
Miller Reed threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, Jaylen Stone his top receiver with four catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Andre Englemon Jr. caught the other touchdown to go with 79 receiving yards. Ludlow showed balance offensively with 245 rushing yards, 164 of them coming from Nicholi Abbott on 17 carries and adding a touchdown.
Freshman Deaken Reed led the defense with 13 tackles, three of them for loss. The Panthers forced three turnovers.
Holmes was able to provide some offense, the 18 point total their most in a game since Oct. 27, 2022, a span of 22 games. They were paced by Xarion Foster on the ground with eight carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. The Bulldogs ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Chames accounting for the other two. Jamari Lockett added four catches for 90 yards.
Nicholas County 26, Bellevue 6
The Tigers were knotted at six at the half, but the Bluejackets did all the scoring from there in the second half.
Bellevue’s lone score came from a Kameron Stokes touchdown pass. The offense strugged mightily with just 87 total yards of offense.
Dayton 62, Pendleton County 49
Malachi Kennedy scored eight touchdowns for the Green Devils in their opening game of the brand new stadium.
Badin (Ohio) 66, Dixie Heights 21
Badin put up 45 points in the first half in this one.
The Colonels got their touchdowns on two Mason Fields passing strikes, the other a Nishawn Golsby two-yard run to make it 31-21 with 5:44 remaining in the first half. The Rams scored 35 unanswered from that point.
Holy Cross 25, Bracken County 24
The Indians forced five turnovers and held the Polar Bears without a point on extra point and two-point attempts to prevail at Thomas More University.
Holy Cross led 17-12 at the half and 25-24 with 11:08 to play when Bracken County’s extra point attempt was blocked, which proved to be the final. The Indians also added a special teams touchdown when they ran back a Polar Bears onside kick attempt.
The Indians move to 2-0.
Sayre 8, Bishop Brossart 5
Leading 5-0, Sayre scored a touchdown with 38 seconds left for the win.
Brossart’s points came via a safety and field goal in the defensive battle at the Mustang Athletic Complex. The Mustangs led 2-0 after three and got a Max Runge field goal with a little over seven minutes remaining in the fourth.
Simon Kenton 43, Western Brown 24
The Pioneers are off to a 2-0 start, thanks to scoring 28 unanswered when facing a 16-15 deficit in the first half.
Scott 35, Bullitt Central 21
The Cougars led 14-6 and 21-19 at the half before the Eagles rallied for 16 unanswered in the second half to even up at 1-1 on the season.
Saturday, Aug. 30
Campbell County 21, Southwestern 19
The Camels are off to their first 2-0 start since 2007 with a Saturday afternoon victory down at The Reservation in Somerset.
