Campbell County head coach Davey Johnson said third quarters have been the strongest ones for the Campbell County girls basketball team this year.
The Camels scored 25 points in the third quarter on the road to beat Walton-Verona, 70-58.
“We just have to figure a way to bottle that up and have that in the first quarter,” Johnson said. “That’s a lot of what we talk about in the locker room. We can’t keep digging ourselves holes because eventually, we won’t be able to climb out of it. But the girls played well, fought through some adversity all game long.”
Izzy Jayasuriya led Campbell County (3-1) with 21 points, including 13 in the pivotal third quarter. Madeleine Barbian made four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points with Faith Whitford and Macie Peoples scoring 11 and eight, respectively.
“We have good pressure and coming into the second half, we had good energy on defense, kept getting steals and it led to more momentum for us,” Peoples said. “We played as a team and were ready to rotate on defense. Everyone was talking and getting through screens when we needed to.”
Walton-Verona (2-3) also put three players in double figures. Nova Dryden and Elin Logue scored 14 each with Avery Geiman scoring 11 and Braylin Terrell nine.
Walton-Verona plays Spencer County in the Ronald McDonald House Classic at Oldham County on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Campbell County plays at Newport Central Catholic on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
