The second meeting between the Simon Kenton Pioneers (18-8 overall) and Covington Catholic Colonels (19-5) had a lower score, but a similar result.
The Pioneers ventured to Park Hills and edged the Colonels, 4-3 to snap CovCath’s 10-game winning streak. Simon Kenton also beat CovCath, 10-9 on April 12 in Independence.
Simon Kenton head coach Troy Roberts said the Pioneers play better on turf infields. Simon Kenton senior Gavin Riley (2-0) outdueled CovCath senior Chris Young (4-3) in complete games. Riley struck out three and walked three with Young striking out two and walking two.
“We got some good starting pitching,” said Troy Roberts, Simon Kenton head coach. “He held a lineup that’s on a role to five hits. When have good pitching and defense, you’re going to be in a lot of games.”
CovCath committed two errors to one for Simon Kenton. But none of the errors led to any unearned runs. Roberts said Simon Kenton plays better on turf infields adding the Pioneers practice on the turf football field next door.
“I went out there and did my best to help my team get the win,” Riley said. “It felt great. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.”
Simon Kenton doubled CovCath, 10-5 in hits. Junior catcher Chad Atchley went 3 for 4 to lead the Pioneers with a double and run batted in to lead the Pioneers. Senior first baseman Dakota Brown went 2 for 3 with an RBI and junior shortstop Daniel Uhl went 2 for 4 with one run scored. Junior third baseman Logan Cones doubled and scored twice with junior left fielder Bailey Rump adding a double.
CovCath junior designated hitter Charlie Dieruf led the Colonels going 2 for 3. His solo home run leading off the bottom of the fourth tied the game 2-2.
Simon Kenton plays host to Highlands (16-9) on Thursday at 5 p.m. CovCath takes on Newport Central Catholic (8-13) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Baseball
Beechwood 14, Ryle 7
The Raiders (19-7) doubled up the visiting Tigers (18-6) in the second meeting this year between the two.
Ryle batted .433 (13 for 30) overall in the win. Senior shortstop TJ Schira led the Raiders going 3 for 4 with two RBI and scored twice. Senior center fielder Landon Sawyer went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and scored twice with sophomore Dylan McIntyre going 2 for 3 with a triple, three RBI and one run scored. senior third baseman Keegan Flaherty went 2 for 4 with a double, three RBI and scored twice. Junior second baseman Xavier Owens walked twice and scored twice.
“Right now, we’re trying to fight through some injuries. We have guys playing some positions maybe they haven’t played or guys going on short rest,” said Joe Aylor, Ryle head coach. “I think the one big thing is we got down early. We needed some people to step up and we had it. That’s a compliment to us. It was a team win and not just from a single player.”
Ryle used four players in the game. But junior Maverick Rabe (4-1) earned the win in relief striking out two and walking three.
“They’re a good hitting team so I had to mix it up a bit and trust my defense behind me,” Rabe said. “I trust my catcher. I throw it wherever he sets up.”
The game could have been worse. But Ryle made four errors to one for Beechwood leading to four unearned Tiger runs. Ryle earned all 14 of its runs.
Beechwood batted .233 (7 for 30) overall. Senior right fielder Cameron Boyd led the Tigers going 2 for 5 with a double and scored three times. Senior designated hitter Ben Meier added a double with senior outfielder Nazario Pangallo scoring twice and junior third baseman Michael Detzel batted in two.
The Tigers used three pitchers in the loss. Freshman Sawyer Carlisle (1-1) took the loss striking out two and walking three in just more than two innings of work.
Ryle plays at Campbell County (18-8) on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Beechwood plays host to Highlands (16-9) at the same time.
Holy Cross 2, Campbell County 1
The Indians (11-16) scored twice in the top of the fifth to pull off the win over the host Camels (18-8).
Senior Jason Dorning (3-3) pitched a complete game for the Indians. He struck out two, walked six and allowed just the one earned run. Dorning and senior designated hitter Will Lachmann had doubles.
Junior Jonah Kemplin (0-1) took the tough pitching loss for the Camels striking out four and walking just one. Junior Connor Weinel pitched two scoreless innings in relief walking one and allowing just one hit.
Both teams made one error. But Campbell County’s error led to the two Indians runs.
Both teams had five hits. Senior first baseman Braden Kramer had a double for Campbell County.
Holy Cross travels to Cincinnati (Ohio) Western Hills on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Campbell County plays host to Ryle (19-7) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
