One thing was certain about Walton-Verona’s season: they weren’t going down without a fight.
The Bearcats gave everything they had in a hard-fought, 48-45 loss to North Oldham in the 8th Region boys’ semifinals at Henry County on Monday night.
North Oldham entered the game as one of the favorites to win the region title, according to statewide media. But Walton-Verona, no stranger to adversity, was ready for the challenge.
“We talked about it after the game,” Bearcat coach Mike Hester said. “We battled adversity all year—injuries, sickness, guys sitting out with broken wrists, the flu, stomach bugs. I knew the fight would be there. It shows what our kids were all about.”
The Bearcats found themselves playing from behind the entire game, falling into a 15-6 hole after the first quarter. They clawed back, trimming the deficit to just two points at 19-17 and heading into halftime trailing by three, 21-18.

Each time Walton-Verona seemed to build momentum, North Oldham freshman standout Austin Sears delivered a response.
After Walton-Verona grabbed its first lead of the game midway through the third quarter at 28-26, Sears answered with six straight points to put the Mustangs back in control. They carried a 38-32 advantage into the final quarter.
Sears led all scorers with 21 points, continuing to frustrate the Bearcats down the stretch.
Walton-Verona refused to quit, cutting the deficit to three points with 1:30 remaining. But once again, Sears answered with another six-point surge. Despite his late scoring, the Bearcats still had a chance.
With the game on the line, Walton-Verona couldn’t capitalize on key opportunities. A turnover, an offensive foul, and a missed three-pointer in the closing seconds sealed their fate.
“We stole the Brad Stevens winner,” Hester said. “Went over the top, tried to get Aaron coming off a pin, but they guarded it really well. They kept him from getting the basketball, but he was still able to get the shot off — just not fortunate enough for it to go in.”
The loss marked the end of an impactful run for Walton-Verona’s senior class — a group that included starters Aaron Gutman, Justin Hester, Aidan Kerns, Jonathan Strunk, as well as Billy Holt, Jacob Cottrell, and Jack Schickling. Their contributions left a lasting impression on the program.
“This was a great group,” Hester said. “They’ve been here since I started with the program six years ago when they were seventh graders. We moved a lot of them up, and they laid the foundation for the younger players coming through. I told the underclassmen in the locker room that there’s no better role model than that group.”
Gutman leaves as Walton-Verona’s all-time leading scorer and a Kentucky High School Mr. Basketball finalist — just a few of his many accolades. He finished his final game with 20 points, including 11 of the Bearcats first 13 points of the night.
“This has been the best four years of my life,” Gutman said. “Coach Hester has done a lot for me, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in without everyone here. I love the community. I love the fight we showed, and I have to give credit to my teammates. We’ve always fought and done it together. I loved being a Bearcat.”

Walton-Verona finishes its season with a 21-13 record, while North Oldham advances to the 8th Region Championship on Tuesday night.
