The two games that the Conner Cougars (14-2 overall) and Highlands Bluebirds (7-7) baseball teams have played this year have been tight one-run games.
Conner edged the Bluebirds for the second time this year, 4-3 in the Doc Morris Invitational at Simon Kenton. The Bluebirds had runners at first and second with two out in the top of the seventh before senior Cody Henson got Highlands junior Drew Bath to fly out to center to end the game.
Conner had just four hits and overcame four errors to win the game. Junior left fielder Aaron Wichmann had a double for the Cougars.
Senior Oliver Kerns started the game pitching five innings striking out four and walking two. Senior Carson Wood and Henson pitched in relief for the Cougars. Wood had the win and Henson the save.
Highlands pounded out five hits. Senior shortstop Jack Hendrix went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and junior Brody Benke doubled. Benke (1-2) took the loss in relief striking out four and walking none in four innings. Senior Logan Weber pitched the first two innings striking out two and walking three.
Both teams play again at Simon Kenton to finish the Doc Morris Invitational. Highlands plays Simon Kenton (9-4) at 11 a.m. Conner faces Paintsville (11-3) at 4 p.m. The games were moved back an hour because of rains in the area late Friday.
Campbell County 4, Greenup County 3 (8 innings)
The host Camels (12-3) finished their second game of the Doc Morris Invitational rallying from three down to beat the Musketeers (7-11).
Senior shortstop Aydan Hamilton singled with the bases loaded with two out in the bottom of the eighth to win the game. He went 2 for 5 with two RBI and senior third baseman Evan Clark went 3 for 3 with a double and scored twice. The Camels outhit the Musketeers, 7-6.
Freshman Tyler Schumacher (1-1) pitched two innings to earn the win. Sophomore Zach Franzen pitched the first four innings striking out four and walking three with junior Gavin Bell pitching the next two.
Campbell County plays Newport Central Catholic (4-7) at 3 p.m. at Dixie Heights to conclude the Doc Morris Invitational on Saturday.
