Sen. Shelley Funke Frommeyer, R-Alexandria

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 13, 2026) — Sen. Shelley Funke Frommeyer, R-Alexandria, is joining regional leaders, students, researchers and conservation advocates in the Ohio River Way Challenge, a 23-day paddling expedition highlighting the Ohio River’s role in recreation, environmental stewardship, tourism and economic vitality across Kentucky and the broader Ohio River Basin.

“The Ohio River is one of Kentucky’s greatest natural assets, creating opportunities for recreation, wellness and community connection that enrich the lives of families across the commonwealth,” said Frommeyer. “This challenge shines a light on the beauty and vitality of Kentucky’s river communities while encouraging more people to experience the outdoors firsthand. I’m excited to participate and help highlight the sense of stewardship and connection this effort continues to inspire.”

“Because my district is framed by the Ohio River, this effort is especially meaningful to me,” she added. “When I helped establish the Kentucky Ohio River Regional Recreation Authority (KORRRA) in 2024, I could not have imagined it would grow into such a strong regional partnership dedicated to preserving, protecting and celebrating this remarkable river for future generations.”

In 2025, Frommeyer introduced Senate Resolution 238, directing Kentucky’s Energy and Environment Cabinet to develop strategies for removing waste tires from Kentucky’s waterways and improving long-term river stewardship efforts.

She and the Kentucky General Assembly also directed $200,000 toward the KORRRA, a regional partnership focused on river recreation, tourism and conservation initiatives along the Ohio River, to support a capital and planning grant program. Frommeyer also sponsored Senate Resolution 186 during the 2026 Legislative Session, expressing support for efforts to improve water quality, strengthen fish and wildlife habitats, expand recreation opportunities and promote economic development throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The challenge coincides with the fourth annual Ohio River Basin Day on the Hill in Washington, D.C., on May 13, where advocates are gathering in support of the Ohio River Basin Restoration Program Act. The bipartisan legislation proposes investing $350 million annually over five years for projects focused on water quality improvements, habitat restoration, flood mitigation and recreational infrastructure throughout the basin.

The challenge also features a “Floating Lab,” a 55-foot houseboat serving as a mobile research and education center focused on water-quality monitoring, photography and scientific research tied to the river ecosystem. Eight university students from institutions across the United States and abroad are participating in the initiative.

A filmmaker with the National Park Service will accompany participants throughout the journey to help produce a documentary focused on the Ohio River and the region’s growing water trail system.

Organizers say the Ohio River Way Challenge strengthens regional collaboration while encouraging greater public appreciation for the river’s environmental, recreational and cultural significance.
