Recently, a healthy baby was lovingly surrendered by their mother in the Montgomery County Fire Safe Haven Baby Box. The location is brand new and had its blessing in early April of this year. A press conference will be held on Tuesday, June 18th at 11:30 AM EST to share more informatiotn. Montgomery County Fire EMS is located at 521 E High Street, Mount Sterling, Kentucky 40353. Since 2017, 50 infants have been surrendered using the Safe Haven Baby Box program which allows for anonymous surrender.
Monica Kelsey founded Safe Haven Baby Boxes in 2015 on a mission to end infant abandonment. The organization provides a confidential National Hotline, 1-866-99BABY1. Seventeen states have a Baby Box presence within their state. Kelsey shared, “Our program offers hope to mothers in crisis. We are so grateful this mother trusted us to protect her infant as well as her identity. It is a selfless act and we are proud of the birth mother. Your infant will soon be placed with their forever family who is so anxious to have your baby join their family!”
Montgomery County Fire Captain, Zachary Adams said, “We were honored and blessed to have a baby surrendered at our Fire Station in Montgomery County, KY. The baby was surrendered and appeared to be in good health and was transported to our local hospital. We want to thank Gateway Right to Life for making this possible and Montgomery County Kiwanis for 100% funding of this project! There aren’t words to express how happy we are to be part of this opportunity!”
The National Safe Haven Crisis Line has assisted with over 150 handoff surrenders. Each year the numbers increase with more baby boxes available across the country. Surrendered infants are adopted by families who have registered as foster to adopt. The Local Department of Family Services coordinates the adoption process.
