Thirty-four people were sworn in as American citizens in Frankfort last week.
Secretary of State Michael Adams then gave then encouraged them to register to vote.
Secretary of State Michael Adams welcomed the new citizens at a naturalization ceremony in Frankfort and provided them with an opportunity to register to vote.
“Today, it is fashionable to focus on one’s identity, one’s membership in some group, at the expense of national pride and solidarity,” Adams said in a speech during the ceremony. “I respectfully ask of you, don’t succumb to this. Be proud of your heritage; be proud of your language; be proud of your culture; but be proud foremost to be an American.”
He then said that his staff was on hand to help those folks register to vote.
“Vote, but also volunteer,” Adams said. “We’ve gotten the law changed to allow any Kentucky voter to be a poll worker and help make our democratic system of government possible.”
