A municipal order that the Union City Commission approved in August of 2022 will allow for the extension of Brilliance Avenue, making way for the Grammas Center.
The Grammas Center is a six-acre development named for the family that has owned the property for more than 15 years. It is a $50 million project to build retail space and 12 four-story condos. The project is planned to be completed in 2024.
At Union’s caucus meeting Monday, Mayor Larry Solomon met with Commissioner Doug Bine, Viox & Viox, a local civil engineer and Grammas Center to discuss the progress of the development and to move it forward.
“The project is currently Geotechnology Co. to perform all the Environmental Agency Protection studies on the property and submit all necessary forms,” Soloman said. “The total of $6,000 will be a cost share between the city and Grammas Development, each paying $3,000.”
The city’s portion will be paid by the American Rescue Plan Act funds, funds issued by the federal government to aid in recovery from COVID-19.
The timeline for the environmental studies plan to be complete is 60 to 90 days. Once the environmental work is complete, the city can move forward with the Brilliance Avenue bid cost.
“Grammas is committed to begin development on their project when the city starts building that new road,” Solomon said.
Once the road is set, the commissioners will decide how to proceed with the project.
