The Boone County Parks Department received a prestigious award recognizing public partnerships between libraries and other community organizations across North America.

Boone County Library Director Carrie Herrmann awarded the county’s parks department the national “Let’s Move in Libraries” award during the Nov. 4 Boone County Fiscal Court meeting. Parks Director David Whitehouse was in attendance to accept the award.

Established in 2023, this award recognizes library collaborations that have a tangible impact on their communities. The award’s purpose is to celebrate innovative partnerships between libraries and community groups that promote learning, wellness and engagement.

The parks department was one of 10 partnerships chosen for the award. A panel of 27 reviewers from 20 states and provinces across the U.S. and Canada met in September to analyze 36 nominations submitted by public libraries throughout the year.

“The Boone County Public Library nominated the Boone County Parks Department for an award, and it is my honor to present the Let’s Move in Libraries Award to a partnership that has transformed how our community learns, plays and connects,” she said.

Herrmann explained that the library and parks department have a 25-year history of promoting activity, literacy, and community engagement. Their joint programs, such as Story Time in the Park, Family Nature Days, Story Walk Trails and the Summer Concert Series, have provided thousands of residents with opportunities to be active and learn in public spaces.

  • Family Nature Days allow residents of all ages to come together and learn about the local environment through guided walks, hands-on activities and educational demonstrations.
  • Story Walk Trails combine reading with physical activity by displaying the pages of a children’s book along walking paths in local parks.
  • The Summer Concert Series turns county parks into vibrant community hubs by hosting live performances from local artists. These free concerts draw hundreds of residents each season, offering an opportunity to connect while enjoying music, food and the nature.

“This partnership brings library experiences directly into parks and neighborhoods,” Herrmann said. “These programs welcome thousands of participants each year, removing barriers to access and ensuring that learning and wellness are available to everyone in the community. This collaboration is a shining example of what is possible when two public institutions unite around a shared mission to build a thriving, connected and active community.”

Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore touted the collaborative work of the library and parks department.

“You know how we love partnerships, and I talk often that we can accomplish so much more when we use our shared resources and our agencies that work together so closely. What a great example – only 10 of these nationally – what a great honor.”
