Northern Kentucky’s economic development community recently celebrated 20 years of investment from Amazon in the region.
Regional officials and business leaders gathered last week at Amazon’s Air Hub at CVG, the company’s largest global field operations site, to commemorate the anniversary. BE NKY Growth Partnership President and CEO Lee Crume presented Amazon with a recognition award. Amazon opened its first facility in Northern Kentucky in 2005, according to BE NKY officials.
The 600-acre air hub, a $1.5 billion investment that opened in 2021, employs more than 2,000 full-time workers and processes millions of packages weekly. The site has played a key role in CVG becoming one of North America’s fastest-growing cargo airports.
“Amazon’s presence in Northern Kentucky has been a game-changer — not just for job creation, but for the long-term vitality of our region,” Kenton County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann said in a news release.
Amazon’s regional growth also includes the 2023 opening of a 125,000-square-foot last-mile delivery station in Florence—its first in Northern Kentucky—which is fully equipped for electric delivery vehicles.
Amazon’s Northern Kentucky footprint now includes 11 fulfillment centers, five delivery stations, a same-day delivery site, two Whole Foods Market stores, and five solar installations. The company’s solar array at the CVG air hub, built in partnership with Duke Energy, is the largest rooftop installation in the state and powers the equivalent of 400 homes.
Local leaders credited Amazon’s presence for attracting other aviation and logistics companies to Boone County, including FEAM AERO, Epic Flight Academy, and L2 Aviation. Officials also highlighted Amazon’s investments in upskilling programs, including its Career Choice initiative, which provides employees with education and training opportunities.
