This week, the Campbell County Fiscal Court conducted the first reading of its proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

About 17% of the operating budget remains for this fiscal year, said County Treasurer Laura Lewis during a presentation to the fiscal court on Wednesday.

There were a handful of key takeaways from Lewis’ presentation and existing information from the county:

  • Collected county revenues consistently exceed expenditures, even when projections show expenditures exceeding revenues
  • The county plans to seek the hire of two new animal control employees, plus two new road maintenance specialists
  • There is about $40 million in potential bonding for projects still under consideration, a figure that’s included in the final expenditure total for the proposed budget but isn’t guaranteed to be spent
  • Property and payroll taxes make up about 52% of the budget’s revenue

The state must approve the proposed budget before the county can perform a second reading on it. As such, an exact date for a second reading is currently unknown, but the county must approve the budget by June 30. Budgets can be amended yearly by the fiscal court’s majority vote.
