Les Hill, who was announced last month as the replacement for former Boone County Sheriff Mike Helmig, was officially sworn in as the Boone County Sheriff on Monday and began officially serving on Wednesday.

“The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is the largest full-service sheriff’s office in the commonwealth,” said Hill in a press release. “Each and every one of our deputies must be sworn in by the sheriff to formally accept their duty to serve and protect our residents, and the visitors, families, friends and workers who come into our county every day.”

The early swearing in allowed the county to begin the transfer of power in a smooth manner, said a statement from the county. Hill swore in his command staff and several school resource officers on Monday and will need to swear in 189 Boone County Sheriff deputies now that he’s the new sheriff.

“State law requires a sheriff to be formally appointed and authorized at all times,” said Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore, “[The] swearing in of Col. Hill ensures we follow the letter of the law, and more importantly, provides residents with uninterrupted services.”

Hill told LINK nky in March that he planned to run for the sheriff’s seat in 2026.
