Southgate city officials recognized and honored eight staff members who had served the city for over 10 years during their April council meeting.

Mayor Jim Hamberg shared thoughts about each employee as he presented them with service awards.

Three city public works department members were honored, including City Foreman Arvil Bowman, who has been with the city for 24 years. Also recognized were public works laborers Jeff Stolz with 20 years of service and Richmond Stortz, who has been with the city for 13 years.

“I can’t tell you enough about public works and what they do,” said Hamberg. “Arvil, Jeff and Richmond together, what they do for us here, it’s really important for our city, keeping up the streets the way they are, the parks the way they are.”

Hamberg said the crew plays an important role in keeping the streets clear and safe for police and fire to respond to issues in the city.

“It’s important for what they do, and we appreciate the work that they do for us. We don’t always get that opportunity to say that publicly. I tell them that whenever I see them. The city couldn’t function properly without them.”

The mayor honored Southgate Police Chief John Christmann, who has been with the department since 2012. He also recognized Sergeant Dan Johns and Sergeant Ron Gross, who have each served the city of Southgate for more than 10 years.

“We’ve just got an outstanding department,” said Hamberg. “We’re very blessed. We are the second safest city in the state of Kentucky. So, out of 407 cities, we’re second. I think that says pretty much about our police department. Guys, thanks for what you do. We really appreciate you very much.”

From the city administration department, city clerk Brandi Barton has served the city for 11 years, assisting the mayor and citizens. Code Enforcement Officer John Lauber was honored as well, for 15 years of service. He will retire this year.

The mayor noted he was proud to have hired most of the recipients during his tenure. He praised his entire staff.

“I can’t wait to see, every day, what they’re going to be doing next. They surprise the heck out of me all the time. So guys, I really appreciate what you do, what you do for us, for me, but mainly for the city of Southgate.”
