Indian Motorcycle of Northern Kentucky wants to expand its dealership; all it needs is the approval of the Boone County Planning Commission.

The dealership, currently located at 10855 Dixie Hwy. in Walton, sells new and preowned bikes from top brands, including Indian, KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas, Royal Enfield and Polaris Slingshot.

Jason Adkins, president of Indian Motorcycle of Northern Kentucky, is seeking approval of a concept development plan to construct multiple large commercial buildings on the property. These buildings will be part of a new power sports dealership campus when complete.

The plan was first publicly discussed at a hearing on Feb. 5, then again at the planning commission’s zone change committee meeting on Feb. 19.

“Basically, what we’re trying to do is to develop this land for future power sports dealerships, maintaining the Indian Motorcycle, what we have here, but also bringing in more of the Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, a couple of those are already in Florence,” Adkins said during the hearing.

Adkins, who hails from Wilmington, Ohio, is also the president of Clinton County Motorsports, an authorized KTM, Kawasaki, Polaris, Star Motorcycles, Suzuki, Victory and Yamaha power sports dealership.

According to documents provided by the planning commission, Indian Motorcycle wants to build two commercial buildings, 28,000 square feet and 11,000 square feet, respectively. Furthermore, a 6,400-square-foot addition will be built onto the current dealership.

Brock MacKay, Viox & Viox’s landscape architect, said the new building will match the architecture of the current dealership.

The property is 6.7 acres in total, sandwiched between US-25 to the east and I-75 to the west. Besides the dealership, much of the property is covered in lightly used parking lots, which will be incorporated into the larger development.

In 2005, the planning commission approved a site plan for the now-shuttered Richwood Power Sports and the construction of a 17,600-square-foot commercial building. In 2015, CCM LLC, the Ohio-based company that operates Indian Motorcycle of Northern Kentucky, purchased the property for $1.5 million.

MacKay explained that one of the buildings would be more storage-oriented than strictly a dealership. The main two buildings will be used to display and repair vehicles and conduct sales activities.

“I think we were just trying to find some type of combination with an understanding that some of it’s going to be for display other others, inventory storage, places for them to work on, the bikes, you know, shop area, places to put them together,” MacKay said.

The project’s next step is to be voted on by the entire planning commission on March 5. If the concept plan passes the commission, it will then be heard by the Boone County Fiscal Court, which has the final say on all zoning decisions within unincorporated Boone County.
