Union has joined other cities in Northern Kentucky and the commonwealth generally in opposing a state-run, centralized method of collecting local payroll taxes.
Union passed a resolution opposing such collection methods at their meeting Monday night. Although no bill floating such a mechanism has materialized yet, several cities have expressed opposition to such a measure for fear that it would bring new expenses to city governments or even discourage businesses from setting up shop in their cities. Fort Mitchell, Fort Wright and the Boone County Fiscal Court have passed similar resolutions.
The commission did not engage in discussion on the matter on Monday, but the text of the resolution states that such collection methods “would have a severely adverse effect on the financial condition and economic development” of local governments in the commonwealth.

Although the commission did not take part in the discussion, Kentucky Rep. Marianne Proctor, a Republican who’s from Union, attended the meeting to give her support to the resolution and discuss her other legislative priorities for the current session.
“I’m hoping to work collaboratively with you guys, especially as we are looking at this local tax collection,” Proctor said.
