Covington has approved $75,000 for the repair of crosswalks at the intersection of Rivercenter Boulevard and Madison Avenue.
The Covington City Commission approved the measure at their meeting Tuesday night. The money will come from funds generated by the area’s tax increment financing, or TIF, district.
TIF districts are common municipal funding measures whereby a portion of the property taxes collected in an area are redirected from general community services and instead diverted back into the district. Developers and cities often use TIF districts to bankroll infrastructure.
“It’s very unsightly, and it’s a hazard to pedestrian safety,” said John Sadosky, the city’s assistant economic development director, at the caucus meeting on Nov. 26 when describing the problems at the intersection.
The work itself will entail new concrete pouring as well as the removal, repurposing and replacement of pavers in the intersection. Traffic will be diverted during the construction, which is slated to last between 30 and 45 days starting this month.
