We enter year three of partnering up with OrthoCincy Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in expanding the Team of the Week awards!
Through the first two years, $4,000 in scholarships have been handed out to the Team of the Season and Team of the Year award winners.
In order to get to that point, it starts here with the weekly Team of the Week awards.
In the same fashion as year’s past, the weekly TOW winners will then be eligible for Team of the Season. It’s typically 10 winners from that respective season that runs for fall, winter and spring sports. The Team of the Season vote comes at the end of those respective seasons where the winner is awarded a plaque and a $500 scholarship to a student-athlete of their choice.
Then it comes down to the ultimate prize…Team of the Year where the three Team of the Season winners will then be put up in a vote for another plaque for the trophy case and an additional $500 scholarship to a student-athlete of their choice.
This week’s nominated teams are listed below with some information provided by the submitter or LINK nky staff. The poll where you can vote follows at the end of the article. Some of the nominees are combined for a couple weeks with some seasons starting earlier than others.

St. Henry Football
St. Henry was involved in a wild one Friday night, coming out on the winning end of a 43-40 victory over Bishop Brossart for their first win of the season. The Crusaders rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit and recovered a fumble late to seal it.
Game ball goes to Lucas Pate, who rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns, had a receiving touchdown and recovered the fumble late to win it. Cy Parento threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Stewart was the leading tackler with nine while Quincy Thom intercepted a pass.
Walton-Verona Girls Soccer
After playing five games in six days, in which they went 4-0-1, Walton-Verona’s girls soccer team won the 8th Region All “A” title on Sept. 1 with an 8-0 victory over Henry County.
It improved their record to 6-1-2 on the season.
They’ve been led in the attack by Aubrey Fuller with nine goals in the nine games. Ella Lengle has five that found the back of the net with Avery Turner adding four goals. The Bearcats have had a balanced attack as eight different players have scored a goal on the season while Lengle leads with five assists. Kylee Lemming has allowed just two goals in the nine games with 29 saves.
Holy Cross Volleyball
Sitting at 2-2 going into the week, Holy Cross went 7-0 last week which included winning Scott’s September Slam.
In their undefeated week, they defeated Boone County twice, Walton-Verona, Campbell County, Conner, Ballard and Madison Central.
Team leaders early on in the season are Maya Hayden and Lacey Hunt in kills with 88 and 81, respectively. Hunt leads with 134 assists, Lucy Lenihan adding 114. Hunt also leads with 34 aces, Lenihan and Jordyn Timmerding with 13 apiece. The team digs leader is Avery Sturgeon with 101.
Dayton Football
The Greendevils are off to their first 3-0 start since 2020 after a 56-0 victory over Owen County on Friday.
They’ve outscored opponents 139-7 in the start and look to go to 4-0 at Ludlow this week.
Cooper Volleyball
Cooper has rattled off three wins in a row to improve to 3-1 on the year. Last week they defeated Newport Central Catholic and Boone County.
They’ve been led by Isabella Taylor and Gisele Slayback in kills with 54 and 49, respectively. Lilli Brown gets the offense going with 151 assists while also holding the team lead with 14 aces. Blakely White is right behind her with 13 and leads the team with 60 digs, Brown with 49 and Julia Thoman with 47.
Ryle Boys Soccer
The Raiders have won seven in a row including wins over Simon Kenton and Covington Catholic last week.
The win over the Colonels snapped CovCath’s 29-match unbeaten streak over 9th Region opponents.
The Raiders are led by Danny Harding with seven goals on the season so far, Preston Scott has five while Cooper Neace and Chase McCarthy each have four. Grant McCoy paces Ryle with seven assists Scott, Harding and Neace each with four. Andrew Stropko has made 32 saves in seven games, Nicholas Heredia with 13 saves in five games while each have a shutout.
