Bellevue and Southgate independent school districts are applying for state grants to fund more staff for their Family Resource and Youth Services Centers, or FRYSCs.

FRYSC coordinators support students and families with resources outside the classroom, like assistance with food, clothing or referrals to counseling services.

Currently, only one FRYSC coordinator serves both Bellevue’s Grandview Elementary School and all of Southgate Independent Schools.

If approved, the grants would fund separate coordinators for Grandview Elementary School and the entire Southgate district.

Bellevue already has a separate coordinator for its middle and high school.

During a Sept. 2 special meeting, Bellevue Superintendent Misty Middleton said Bellevue and Southgate are the only ones in the state that split FRYSCs across districts.

Middleton and Duty said because of the unique arrangement, they’re hopeful the grants will come through.

“Both districts have done a great job working together to ensure that the partnership is a successful one. However, it has been a challenge having one person cover two separate school buildings,” Southgate Superintendent Greg Duty said in an email.
