The LINK nky Educator of the Week contest recognizes and celebrates the incredible educators who go above and beyond for Northern Kentucky students every day.
Each week, we will choose three nominees who have made an impact on their community and who represent a diverse mix of roles, grade levels, subject areas, school types and geographic locations.
LINK nky’s Educator of the Week is sponsored by Gateway Community & Technical College. Each weekly winner will advance to the Educator of the Semester contest, where readers will vote to select one outstanding educator to receive a $100 gift card from Gateway to help purchase classroom supplies, decorations and other school essentials.

The Educators
Educator: Elise Slavey
Role: Teacher at Twenhofel Middle School
Nominator: Missy Cooper
Why Cooper nominated Slavey:
Ms. Slavey is in her first year of special education and has been phenomenal with my son. Her communication beats my expectations, and she goes out of her way to keep parents informed. She took an interest in my son from the start of the year, and already knows him very well. She is an excellent educator, and I am so thankful my son is in her hands each day!
Educator: Sarah Shamblin
Role: Teacher at Dixie Heights High School
Nominator: Sawyer Toon
Why Toon nominated Shamblin:
I am nominating Sarah Shamblin for being the amazing band director she is. Not only does she direct the Dixie Heights High School Marching Band, but she also uses her time to direct our Concert Band, Jazz Band, and other music-related activities at Dixie Heights.
She works tirelessly every day to make sure that our bands can perform, so we can share our love for music and enjoy doing so. Even when it seems like we can’t go any further and we’ve hit a roadblock, she always finds a way to help us.
Educator: Andrew Perrin
Role: Teacher at Campbell County Middle School
Nominator: Eve Freppon
Why Perrin nominated Freppon:
Mr.Perrin is a 6th grade Development of Civilization teacher; he has helped me grow. If you need help, Mr.Perrin will always help with anything school- or life-related. He has helped me understand everything he taught me.
My favorite thing about the class is that there would be very in-depth discussions. He always dresses over the top for spirit days. And the funniest thing about him is that every Friday, he wears a shirt that says “I Love Fiesta Day” because that’s what’s for lunch. His class is the highlight of my day most of the time, and always has me interested. Thank you, Mr.Perrin!
