Each week, throughout the season, make sure to come here on Monday’s (outside of Labor Day) to check out the weekly standouts and 10 takeaways from Friday night.
We’ll highlight the 200-yard passers, 100-yard rushers, 100-yard receivers, defensive standouts and kicking standouts.
The criteria has changed for the defensive standout list. The minimum is at least 10 tackles or multiple tackles for loss. As always, if a turnover is recorded, then you make the list, to me that’s the ultimate goal of a defense. Kicking standouts will include at least four successful extra-points and or any field goals made.
First and 10 (10 takeaways from Week 3)
— After nearly pulling off a victory at Boone County the week prior, St. Henry was involved in another wild one Friday night, this time coming out on the winning end of a 43-40 victory over Bishop Brossart for their first win of the season. The Crusaders rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit and recovered a fumble late to seal it. Game ball goes to Lucas Pate, who rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns, had a receiving touchdown and recovered the fumble late to win it. The Cru now have Bellevue and then a bye week before they get into district play.
— Newport Central Catholic was looking at a 21-7 deficit to Boone County and an 0-3 start right before halftime in Florence. They then went on to score 48 unanswered and get the first win in the Terry Brown era. Whatever the halftime speech was, bottle that one up Coach Brown! The ‘Breds ran for 362 yards and five touchdowns in the victory, Vander Hundemer and Gary Rowland combining for 303 yards and four touchdowns.
— Beechwood has now opened each game with a kickoff return for a touchdown. In their first game it was Nathan Pabst, the second one Tyler Fryman. Will teams continue to kick it deep or just let a potent offense start at the 35 every time? Pick your poison.
— Cooper’s final defensive tally in their 11-0 shutout victory of Ryle: nine tackles for loss, four sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries. Ryle ended with 113 yards of offense, nearly half of them coming on the final drive.
— Talk about spreading the wealth. In Highlands 55-14 victory over Campbell County, they had three different quarterbacks throw for a touchdown, eight different ball carriers and 11 different receivers catch a pass. Now comes a big test as they host No. 1 in 4A Boyle County on Friday. The Rebels will most likely be without the services of Seneca Driver, the top ranked recruit in the state due to two unsportsmanlike penalties in their win over Lexington Christian Academy.
— Newport ran for 300 yards and five touchdowns in their 50-0 win over Gallatin County, the Wildcats first win of the season. I know it’s been NewCath’s district since it aligned in 2022, but this year seems like a year where the Wildcats or Dayton could create a potential threat to end their run.
— Despite the loss to St. Henry, Bishop Brossart had some big performances in the 43-40 loss. Landon Spaulding threw for 295 yards and ran for 137 more, totaling five touchdowns, two passing, three rushing. Quinten Tischner had 131 yards receiving and a touchdown to go with 10 tackles and a tackle for loss on defense.
— We’re down to just four unbeatens left in NKY: Dayton (3-0), Holy Cross (3-0), Lloyd Memorial (3-0) and Beechwood (2-0).
— There’s not one, not two, but three Yutze’s to worry about for Walton-Verona. The three combined for 24 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack in their 33-0 victory over Ludlow.
