The city of Newport broke ground Wednesday on a $16.5 million city-owned parking garage that will be built on the former site of World Peace Bell.
City leaders say the above-ground, 405-space public garage will support and spur development while providing new parking options in Newport’s downtown that will enhance accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors.
Spaces in the garage will be available to the public. It is expected to open in late 2025.
“We have been talking about the need for public parking for over 20 years,” said Newport City Manager Tom Fromme. “This investment addresses that need and also serves as an aid to economic development in our downtown.”
Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli Jr. called construction of the garage a major milestone for Newport.
“As our city continues to redevelop and attract more businesses, visitors and residents, it’s crucial that we invest in infrastructure that supports that growth,” Guidugli Jr. said. “We have worked hard to create a structure that blends into the aesthetics of Monmouth Street while addressing our future needs. With Newport’s downtown becoming an increasingly popular destination, the new garage represents a key investment in the city’s infrastructure and its future growth.”
The garage is being built on the same block—bordered by Monmouth, York, Fourth and Fifth streets—that hotel operator Shaun Pan is working with developers on a mixed-use project that will include two Hilton brand hotel—TRU and Home 2 Suites. Pan is also the owner and operator of a riverfront Hampton Inn & Suites that is just a block away.
Earlier this year the two-acre site was cleared of an office building that has been demolished. The 32-ton World Peace Bell was moved to the city’s maintenance facility, where it will be stored until a permanent location is determined.
