Campbell County Schools Food Services Department has a new internship program for high schoolers.

The food services department is seeking up to three Campbell County High School students aged 16 or older to participate in its new program. Students will earn $10.10 per hour for up to 20 hours per week, assisting with key program components.

Campbell County Schools and Community Education Director Courtney Sauerbeck said the district has committed to continually increasing work-based learning opportunities and providing students with as many varied experiences as possible.

According to the district, increased student participation will help offset the costs of the interns, who will assist in preparing and serving hot meals for the after-school supper program at the high school. This initiative will also support the expansion of operations to provide hot suppers to more students remaining on campus after school.

Recent meal counts show that participation in after-school programs at Campbell County High School increases by over 300% when hot food is offered. The internship program will enhance the ability to offer more local options and semi-homemade or scratch-made menu items across all Campbell County Schools. Interns will also assist in preparing these bulk items for use in all district cafeterias.

Interns will receive comprehensive training, including one-on-one instruction from the Department of Agriculture’s Chefs in Schools program. They will gain skills in industry certification, cooking, food safety and general kitchen operations, along with training on equipment usage, documentation and other essential skills needed to serve a large volume of meals.
