Walton City Council also held a first reading to approve the Boone County comprehensive plan, otherwise known as Plan 2045, at its meeting on Tuesday evening.

The Boone County comprehensive plan is updated every five years, serving as a set of recommendations for zoning and development for Walton, Florence and Union.

There are 112 goals and objectives laid out in the most recent plan, which focuses on everything from public transit to housing to economics to the environment.

Councilmembers expressed concern about the plan’s language regarding “mixed-use developments” but ultimately decided to vote in favor. They will hold further discussions with the Boone County Planning Commission and make a formal vote on any amendments at a special meeting on Sept. 3.

According to Kevin Costello, Boone County Planning and Zoning Director, the deadline for jurisdictions in Boone County to approve, deny, or amend the plan is Sep. 4. Florence and Union have already adopted the plan as-is, and the fiscal court will have a meeting Sep. 3 as well to determine any amendments.
