Northern Kentucky organizations are holding open houses across the region to help form a community-driven housing strategy.

These open houses come after The Northern Kentucky Area Development District’s housing study released last year revealed that workforce job creation in the region is outpacing workforce housing availability, which refers to households whose wages ranged from $15 to $25 with monthly housing costs between $500 and $1,500.

The study was conducted on housing needs and workforce across Campbell, Kenton, Boone, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Owen and Pendleton counties.

Among its findings, the study shows that Northern Kentucky needs to add 6,650 additional housing units over the next five years beyond the housing developments already underway or in planning stages. Furthermore, those additional units must align with the income levels of the region’s workforce.

Upcoming open houses will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Independence Senior Center (2001 Jack Woods Parkway, Independence) and Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Pendleton County Public Library (801 Robbins Ave., Falmouth).

These events will gather input from community members to understand how Northern Kentucky’s current housing landscape has impacted their families and how they hope policymakers will address housing issues going forward.

Participants will have the opportunity to review data from the 2023 Northern Kentucky Area Development District Housing data study and will be asked to reflect on that data and share their experiences with housing in the Northern Kentucky region with organizers and other participants.
