Beechwood Independent Schools will run a program next year that will help create and curate social media profiles for district athletes looking to be recruited by college sports programs.

Statements from Superintendent Mike Stacy indicate he came up with the idea after talking with coaches, who told him that college recruitment has moved onto social media. The program will serve as a trial run to see if it is effective and won’t be continued into the following year if it doesn’t work out.

“A lot of coaches have given us feedback that a lot of things, a lot of student athlete recruitment is happening online,” Stacy told LINK nky.

The ongoing construction of the district’s new career facilities will feature a full media lab, so the capability will be there, Stacy said.

“We did [it] one year because I’m not aware of anybody that’s doing it,” Stacy said. “So, I want to make sure that it’s a valuable investment, but at the same time, if that’s the way that things are happening, then I think we’ve got to evolve the way we do business.”

Stacy said that the effort will be completed by staff within the district and will cost about $4,000. The measure was approved as part of the consent agenda at the meeting of the Beechwood Board of Education on Monday.
