Highland Heights City Council gave the go-ahead to begin the design phase of a new road reconstruction project using a grant awarded to the city.
The project would realign the intersection of Sunset Drive and US-27 using funds from the $1.3 million Surface Transportation Program for Northern Kentucky awarded to the city three years ago.
The project is said to improve traffic flow, as well as improve lighting and sidewalks. It will remove two 90-degree turns and will relocate access points to nearby local businesses and neighborhoods.
The design phase will occur in three different parts: design, row and utilities and construction.
A resolution passed at the December Highland Heights City Council meeting confirmed an agreement with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for the design phase that will cost $165,000. CT Consultants will lead the design phase as the city’s engineering team, according to City Administrator Michael Giffen.
Mayor Greg Meyers welcomed the new project for the city during the council meeting.
“It’s going to be a nice project that’ll straighten that road out and help with traffic flow in and out of the area,” said Meyers.
