When Florence resident Jewell Highsmith learned the City of Florence would be hosting its annual National Night Out event on Aug. 1, she said she circled the date on her calendar.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign promoting police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live, the event’s website says.

“I’ve lived in other parts of the country and attended National Night Out activities in other cities, so this provided another opportunity to become more familiar with the first responders here in a relaxed, chilled setting,” Highsmith said.

Attendees mingled with Florence Police Department and Florence Fire/EMS Department personnel, checked out some of the vehicles the departments use, garnered information from many vendors on hand, and dined on the available free food and soft drinks.

“I really liked seeing so many families come out,” Florence resident Gabriel Sosa said. “I believe the family unit is key to having a strong community. And when law enforcement and other first responders can plug into that community bond, it’s a win for all of us.”

Participating vendors included: LiveWell NKY, UPS, Indiana Tech, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky, Clarios, Neck Back & Knee Center, Florence Y’alls, Kelly Services, Crescent Insurance, Texas Roadhouse, NKY Health, kynect, Thomas More University and Mackenzie and Paige Logistics.

“I really wasn’t expecting so many vendors to be present, but it was a welcomed surprise,” Florence resident Gavin Davis said. “The event is a great way to spark dialogue, learn and exchange information. It all begins with communication.”
