The discovery of a dead body on the side of northbound Interstate 71/75 in Covington on Monday morning forced the closure of the busy highway in both directions during morning rush hour.

Just before 7 a.m., Covington Police were dispatched to the 190.1 mile marker near the approach to the Brent Spence Bridge after receiving a call about a non-responsive person on the lying against a barrier.

Police said in a news release that “it was apparent the subject was deceased.”

The dead person was later identified as Donald Holt, 60, of Independence. Police have not yet revealed any details about the circumstances that lead to Holt’s death but in an afternoon update, it was suggested that he was hit by a vehicle, possibly a tractor-trailer.

Holt had been seen at around 3 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Covington, police said. Investigators are unsure why the victim was on the highway.

The interstate reopened at around noon in both directions.

Anyone with information about the person’s death is asked to call Covington Police Lt. Robert Rose at 859-292-2252.
