The Covington Business Council created a new award to honor the late Katie Meyer, a local advocate and community leader.
The council will present it for the first time at its annual dinner on Nov. 12.
Dubbed the “Katie Meyer Spirit of Covington Award,” future awards will honor people who demonstrate the traits Meyer showed during her life: “generosity, fearlessness, authenticity, kindness, compassion” and “an advocate’s nature,” according to the council.
“Katie represented the best Covington had to offer in the way she sought to serve others and create a welcoming environment for all,” said Covington Business Council Executive Director Pat Frew.
Meyer died earlier this year after a battle with colorectal cancer. She was a seminal figure in the community as head of Renaissance Covington, an organization instrumental in the city’s downtown revitalization. She later became the CEO of the Downtown Dayton Project in Dayton, Ohio. She was also a founder of the Northern Kentucky Pride Center. During her time at the Pride Center, Katie helped create the NKY Pride Awards, coordinate PrideFest, and organize the annual Pride Parade.
“Katie would be honored to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Bonnie Meyer, Katie’s wife, “and it is our honor to accept it on her behalf. Of all of Katie’s work, she was most passionate about Covington’s downtown renaissance, and she dedicated her life to making this city what it is today.”
