Raises are coming for Covington Independent Public Schools employees for the 2022-2023 school year.

The Covington board of education approved a 5 percent raise for both certified and classified school employees during Thursday night’s school board meeting.

The only exception to the raises is for school employees who received a $4,000 or higher mid-year market rate adjustment.

The 5 percent increase will effect CIPS employees’ salaries in the following ways: a starting salary for a beginning teacher with no prior experience will increase from $40,051 to $42,054. On the opposite end of the scale, a Rank I teacher with 27 years of experience and 30 hours post-masters is increasing from $71,998 to $75,597.

“Our employees are so deserving of this increase,” Superintendent Alvin Garrison said. “We are blessed with a group of dedicated, hardworking individuals.”

In 2019, Gov. Andy Beshear campaigned on raising teacher salaries. This year, Beshear’s budget proposal aimed to increase teacher and school personnel salaries by a minimum of 5 percent. Beshear and the majority-Republican legislature disagreed. The finalized budget did not include language mandating pay raises.

The state legislature included some additional state school funding, known as SEEK, in the budget. Some Northern Kentucky school districts have instead decided to raise salaries at their own discretion using the additional SEEK funds provided from the budget.
