Community Montessori of Covington will host the first in a series of events aimed at educating the local community in various world religions and cultures this Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Starlit Sanctuary on Greenup Street.
Friday’s event will feature a presentation on the basics of Islam from the Islamic Association of Cincinnati, located out of Cincinnati’s Clifton neighborhood, and is the first in the school’s Unity in Diversity event series.
The event is free, but the school will be collecting donations for the Mary Ann Noll Scholarship, administered through Horizon Community Funds. The scholarship will fund the tuition of a student to the Montessori school.
“A big part of what we do is peace education and learning about the world, learning about other cultures, learning about world religions,” said Ana Summe, an elementary teacher at the academy. “And so, this… works really well with our Montessori philosophy of just learning about the world and how to be peaceful with people who are different than us or people who are the same as us.”
Summe said that a student has already been selected to receive the scholarship, but she declined to share the student’s identity for privacy reasons. The scholarship is given to students who demonstrate financial need and academic aptitude.
A similar event for the students at the school occurred on Tuesday. Friday’s event is a family-friendly event and will allow the audience to ask questions.
“It’s just an opportunity to kind of find out what is Islam because in our area in Northern Kentucky… we have plenty of Muslim neighbors, but… it’s not something that many people know very much about.” Summe said.
“The more you know about your neighbors, the more community that you share with them,” she added.
