Campbell County’s Conservation District has promoted the sustainability of natural resources in the county since 1945.

The conservation district works with landowners and other organizations in Campbell County to promote the sustainability of land, water, and other natural resources by encouraging best practices. They have programs like backyard conservation that help residents build raised beds in their backyard to grow vegetables that help create pollinator gardens and compost facilities.

Conservation districts emerged from the dust bowl in the 1930s, according to Conservation Board Supervisor Kirt Hill.

“If you remember your history, that was a time of significant economic and environmental impact,” Hill said. “It was driven in part by our lack of stewardship of our nation’s topsoil.”

The Campbell County Fiscal Court named April 30 through May 7 soil and water stewardship week.

Campbell County Judge/Executive Steve Pendery said this week is being named soil water stewardship week because effective conservation practices ensure soil, water, animals, plants, and air can provide a “rich standard of living.”

“Our survival and continued production, and access to quality food and water depend on robust management of diverse natural resources nationwide,” Pendery read from the proclamation. “Stewardship calls upon every individual to conserve these precious resources to ensure their prosperity for generations to come.”
