It’s that time of the year: The Fourth of July is Monday and this weekend the region will be celebrating — most likely with fireworks.

“People want to celebrate July 4, and that’s understandable,” Bellevue City Administrator Frank Warnock said. “However, there are those who disrespect their neighbors and don’t appreciate how dangerous fireworks can be.”

Warnock said adults need to supervise their kids when it comes to the use of fireworks.

“Bellevue is a built-out urban city; buildings and structures are close to each other, and it’s simply not appropriate to set off fireworks near them,” Bellevue-Dayton Fire Chief Chris Adkins said. “I worry that fires will be the result of improper use of fireworks and that injuries will occur.”

State law mandates that a person may not ignite fireworks:

  • Unless he or she is at least 18 years of age
  • Fireworks are not to be ignited within 200 feet of any structure, vehicle or any other person
  • Use of the fireworks does not place him or her in violation of any lawfully enacted local ordinance

“Our police officers will do the best they can to enforce the law,” Bellevue Police Chief Jon McClain said. “We will be watching.”

Here are some guidelines the city asks to follow:

  • Choose a safe, lawful location (further than 200 feet from any structure)
  • Adult supervision must be provided
  • Do not use illegal fireworks
  • Be sober when using fireworks
  • Avoid unnecessary risk
  • Never point fireworks at another person
  • Don’t hold onto fireworks
  • Back up to a safe distance after lighting
  • Never pick up lit fireworks
  • Never hover over fireworks

“Think about your neighbors,” Warnock said. “The loud noises disrupt animals and people sensitive to the explosions. It’s rude to not consider them. Every year I get calls from citizens who don’t want fireworks set off near their homes and pets. They don’t appreciate the disruption. I tell them we do the best we can, but it can be a challenge.”
