The City of Covington’s former Public Works facility on Boron Drive has been transformed into Rumpke’s new Northern Kentucky headquarters.

Rumpke, a major waste management company in the Greater Cincinnati area, has a large presence in Northern Kentucky. In addition to a landfill in Pendleton County, it operates a transfer station in Covington.

Back in January, Rumpke unveiled its brand new $8.2 million transfer station at 4339 Boron Drive in Latonia. Now, Rumpke has opened its Northern Kentucky headquarters on the same property, effectively consolidating much of its regional operations.

In total, the project cost around $3.5 million, according to Rumpke. The company purchased the Boron Drive property from City of Covington in 2020 for approximately $8 million. Covington’s Public Works Department has since moved into a new facility located on Russell Street.

For Regional Vice President Adam Rumpke, retrofitting and upgrading the facility is a core principle of Rumpke: reduce, reuse and recycle.

“We reused an existing facility. We repurposed it, and that’s what we ask people to do. At your home, at your business, we want you to recycle,” Rumpke told LINK nky. “We’re doing the same thing. We repurposed this building, recycled it into something that we could use.”

The facility is approximately 24,000 square feet and includes multiple offices, conference rooms and a washing bay for garbage trucks. At first, the facility will house 45 employees, but Rumpke plans to expand its on-site workforce to 80 in the coming months.

One of the facility’s key aspects is its six maintenance bays. Garbage trucks are on the road multiple days a week for many hours at a time, sustaining a lot of wear and tear. Rumpke’s new service bays will expand the company’s maintenance capabilities, allowing its mechanics to have access to better technology and more room to work.

Rumpke Communications Coordinator Seth Byrd said the new facility has boosted morale among the company’s maintenance department.

“Now they have plenty of space,” Byrd said. “Now we can help that service process to keep trucks constantly on the road. I think, overall, the maintenance guys are excited, and we’re excited for them.”

The opening of their new headquarters completes a larger facility revamp for Rumpke.

“This new facility here in Covington – it was a big investment for us,” Rumpke said. “We’re excited to win for us. It’s a win for the community, and that’s what we’re looking for – a nice partnership between Rumpke and Covington.”
