Hundreds rallied at the World Peace Bell in Newport for Democratic US Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes.
The current Secretary of State arrived in the city on the heels of a new poll that shows she has retaken the lead over incumbent Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
State Representatives Arnold Simpson (D-Covington) and Leslie Combs (D-Pikeville) as well as former Governor Martha Layne Collins spoke to the large crowd before Grimes took to the podium.

“Thank you Newport for a great rally tonight! What an incredible crowd,” Grimes tweeted/via the campaign
Meanwhile, McConnell, who also appeared in Northern Kentucky last week, went on Kentucky Sports Radio and talked with host Matt Jones. “It was very clear Ol’ Mitch isn’t a fan of the show and he came on with a little hostility right out of the gate. As Matt put it, he was ‘needlessly angry’,” KSR writer Drew Franklin wrote on the site.
The interview landed Jones on national TV Wednesday night.
The interview was picked up by many prominent national political sites. Grimes appeared on the show previously.
